Custom Planet is an add-on that generates lightweight planet visuals using a specialized material setup applied to a 2D plane rather than a 3D sphere. It provides an interface to configure various planetary layers, including base surface textures, water bodies, emissive details like city lights or lava, cloud densities, and atmospheric scattering effects. Users can also automatically generate a customizable starfield background.

Because the tool relies on pre-rendered elements mapped to a flat plane, it provides real-time feedback and bypasses the render times typically associated with volumetric atmospheres and high-resolution spherical textures. This makes it highly optimized for large-scale space scenes. However, this method restricts full 3D camera rotation around the planet and limits lighting to a set of pre-configured angles.
